A little more to discover.
A vocabulary tour across the ancient world
This hard edition brings 24 names of places, peoples, and monuments into a 22 by 22 grid. It is a broad historical vocabulary collection, not a map of one period or a claim that all these societies existed together. History readers can try recalling names with the online target list hidden, then test straight lines running horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or backward.
Prepare a history-table handout
Download the Letter or A4 puzzle PDF and print the saved file. The paper edition shows every target, so participants can search from a complete list and underline names they want to research later. The answer PDF is a separate download with marked solution paths. Online and paper editions retain the same grid each time you return.
Print freely for learners
Teachers may batch-print this sheet for classroom use, and personal copies are free too. Keep the printed source address when handing it out. A follow-up could locate several found places on a historical map, with dates checked separately. Recognizing a spelling in this puzzle does not by itself establish where a place was or which period its remains belong to.
Continue with buildings and books
The four related activities offer other routes through cultural vocabulary. Architecture turns from place names to building details, while Cozy Hobbies provides a gentler large-print search. The Metropolitan Museum's Art of the First Cities background page is useful for exploring ancient Near Eastern art beyond the names collected here; it offers a different way to explore the material culture behind historical names.
